The City of Defiance, through the Land to Lake initiative, implemented a significant Water Quality Improvement project in 2018. The City received grant funding through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) administered through the Ohio EPA. The grant is intended to reduce sediment loading into the Maumee River watershed in an effort to reduce the addition of nutrients ultimately entering Lake Erie.
The project area covers the north and south banks of the Maumee River from the Clinton Street bridge to the Fort Grounds and includes Pontiac Park which is owned by the Defiance County Metro Park Board.
A project overview PDF provides a summary of some of the practices and benefits of the restoration, including Bioengineering Concepts which may be unseen or unfamiliar to visitor’s at the riverfront.
